Technical Description

The 20mm Naval Mount Pedestal System is designed to carry the 20mm type HS 804 automatic gun/magazine and consists of the pedestal, yoke assembly and the cradle assembly.

The pedestal is of a conical steel fabrication with a machined base flange, carrying footholds for the gunner. The base flange is secured to the deck by eight bolts. At the top of the pedestal is a mounting plate to which is bolted the yoke assembly and the training locking bolt housing. Then training limit stop is welded into the mounting plate.

The yoke assembly consists of a casting in the shape of a circular base carrying two trunnion arms. The top of each trunnion arm consists of a capped bearing housing to accept the elevation trunnion bearings.

The circular base is machined to accept the pre-loaded training ball race, which in turn, fits over the training spigot bolted to the pedestal mounting plate. Securing the bearing to the yoke assembly is the lower bearing securing ring, which also carries the fully adjustable training stops.

The elevation and training locking bolt assemblies and the depression limit stop are mounted on the yoke assembly.

The left hand trunnion bearing cap nut split pins are used to anchor the feed opening cover securing chains.

The cradle assembly consists of the cradle assembly supported on each side by the elevation trunnions and trunnion bearings. The complete cradle assembly comprises:

Two gun slides, bolted to the cradle base, which receive the gun body tenons and allow the gun to recoil during firing.

The recoil buffer unit, comprising the recoil spring and hydraulic dashpot to accommodate recoil and run-out forces respectively.

Right and left handgrips with the firing lever incorporated in the left handgrip assembly.

The firing mechanism carried by the rear gun slide casting.

On the outside of the cradle assembly is the three-position Firing Selector Lever for SAFE, SINGLE SHOT (SS) and AUTOMATIC (AUTO).

A tubular fabrication carrying the sights and operators shoulder harness assembly.

The Fore sight is a modified ring sight, calculated on the following parameters:

Target Speed Inner ring 125 m/s (240 kts)

Outer ring 250 m/s (480 kts)

Altitude 400 m (1,300 ft)

Flypath Horizontal, crossing

Range 1,000 m (1,100 yds)

The rear sight is a bead and all adjustments for line and elevation are carried out on this sight.
